Some of the most diehard fans in the world are "Parrotheads," the whimsical moniker given to lovers of all things Jimmy Buffett. If one is a fanatic of this pop culture icon, 180 Gram Records is offering some rare, early Jimmy Buffett albums pressed on virgin vinyl that sound like paradise. Unbeknownst to many, even those who have followed his prolific career for decades, Jimmy Buffett's roots are in country music. These early albums have gone in and out of circulation for years, but remained under the radar to even those who have substantial collections of his work.
Nashville, Tennessee is where Jimmy Buffett started as a country music artist during the 60s. His recording career began in 1970 with the album, Down to Earth, recorded at barnaby records, which was owned by legendary crooner, Andy Williams. His second, and final collaboration with Williams and county folk, was a record called High Cumberland Jubilee. This album was not even released until 1976 as Buffett's career had changed direction, Barnaby Records was near extinction, and the masters were supposedly "lost." After Buffett started to gain fame, the masters re-appeared. Even then, only a few scarce pressings were distributed. This album is often called Buffett's "lost album."
Fortunately, 180 gram records has obtained both of these early rarities and has reissued a limited edition set of vinyl albums. With only 5,000 copies available, fans and collectors have the opportunity to own two Buffett works without a hint of the Key West island sound which was subsequently categorized as "Gulf and western."
Buffett did not visit Key West until 1973 where he decided to incorporate the culture of the Gulf into his music and his life. It became his trademark, and he abandoned Nashville for good. Most critics and biographers abandoned these early Jimmy Buffett albums as well excluded them when referencing his body of work.
As a well-known figure among the general population as the singer with a laid-back island style, music lovers know there is so much more to this prolific individual besides the cult factor so often attributed to his music. Jimmy Buffet is probably best known in for his standard "Margaritaville," a song which he has transformed into everything from restaurants to books to video games.
However, this persona was created after he had a career in country music that should not be forgotten. 180 Gram Records reissued these early vinyl albums and created the limited edition factor to allow music lovers to enjoy "Parrothead" bragging rights by possessing a truly unique, complete set of Jimmy Buffett albums.
