Johnny Cash's recording career began when he approached Sam Phillips, owner of sun studio, about the opportunity to record on the label. Initially turned away as Cash was dedicated to gospel which Phillips no longer recorded, he finally won Phillips over by producing a more rockabilly style. In 1955, Sun Studio began producing the Johnny Cash albums which launched the legendary career of the man famous for his ability to captivate audiences of various ages, and musical preferences. 

Because his music was so diversified, he was revered by artists and fans regardless of style. His music could be somber and truthful while appealing. Although religious as his gospel roots convey, his tunes such as "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk the Line" helped perpetuate his image as one sympathetic to the outlaw. His music always delivered as message which many times regarded the less fortunate. A man of seemingly outward contradictions, he has been quoted as saying he wore black to honor the poor, the prison population, and the victims of war. 

Those who involved in the punk rock movement, independent artists and other fringe musicians consistently refer to Cash when describing their work ethics. Their dedication to recording and distributing their music on high quality vinyl albums rather than compromising standards for mass production is often attributed to Johnny Cash.
